The Fifth Magistrates Conference.

The Ag. Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Kavuma at the fifth Magistrates conference held at Colline hotel in Mukono under the theme "Enhancing public confidence in the Judiciary” urged Magistrates to change the negative public perception of the Judiciary by avoiding unethical behavior in executing their duties.

\r\nHe advised the Magistrates that to win back community trust and inspire public\r\nconfidence in the Judiciary, they must be willing to break down the barriers,\r\nlisten to the people and be available at their work stations during all the\r\nworking hours.
\r\n
\r\nHe advised that they must come down from the pedestal of justice to listen to\r\npeople’s needs which is what every single court case is about; a cry to have a\r\nquestion answered after a fair hearing of the parties to the litigation they\r\nhandle.

\r\nHon. Justice Kavuma assured the Magistrates that they, at the helm of the Judiciary,\r\nare strongly committed to supporting the judicial officers in Uganda at all\r\nlevels to enable them perform better in their day to day work.

\r\nThe Hon. Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine cautioned the Magistrates\r\nto always conduct themselves in a manner that gives the Judiciary its respect\r\nand confidence. He added that they must be mindful of the conduct expected of\r\nthem considering that the way they determine the cases affect the ordinary\r\nUgandans. They must therefore transform the justice system in order to win\r\npublic confidence.

\r\nThe president of Uganda Judicial Officers Association (UJOA), His Worship Vincent\r\nMugabo pointed out that most Magistrate courts face numerous challenges like\r\ninsufficient infrastructure, unqualified support staff, and inappropriate\r\nfunding that could help judicial officers improve performance.

\r\nThe Chief Registrar, Paul Wolimbwa Gadenya, urged the Magistrates to always be\r\nat their work stations and uphold their core values.
